Retail Health

and Safety Management

We know people are at the heart of any retail business, that’s why we want to help you with the management of your health and safety regulations. In such a fast-paced environment, everything needs to be as efficient as possible.

What’s involved in retail property compliance?

Risk assessments for retail compliance can usually be split into two categories: the shop floor and the stockroom.

A stockroom requires consideration of the risks that accompany transporting stock. For instance, training programmes may cover using certain machinery, and how to safely lift heavy items to prevent injuries. Retail property compliance, like it does for hospitality businesses, should also concern what staff bring into the retail area. For instance, wet umbrellas may cause a slip, and leaving bags in walkways could be a dangerous obstruction.

On the shop floor, compliance tend to centre the stream of customers, who are typically unfamiliar with the premises. Training should encompass the ways to keep customers safe, and assist those with extra mobility needs. These assessments need to be worked into fire safety protocol and effectively communicated to staff. The risks of engaging with the public also need to be considered, and staff should be trained to deal with threats and violence in a risk-averse way.

Case Study: Pure Electric

With the Crysp digital platform, we have live data and full visibility of all our stores when it comes to our property compliance lifecycle. The Crysp solution makes our management of health and safety proactive not reactive.
— Ian Pogue, Health and Safety Manager at Pure Electric

THE CLIENT

Pure Electric are one of the UK's fastest-growing retailers, who specialise in electric bikes and scooters products and services.

With 18 stores nationwide and a continually growing team, Pure Electric face one of the UK's most common problems: managing their property compliance while scaling their business.

THE CHALLENGE

Pure Electric were facing a number of challenges while trying to manage their health and safety efficiently and effectively.  One concern was having countless paper documents held in various locations - from health and safety manuals to the monthly manager checks.

On further discussions with Ian Pogue, Pure Electric's Health and Safety Manager, it became clear a simple solution was required to manage the company's reactive maintenance. This covers the day-to-day problems that pop up in stores - anything from a leaky toilet to a break-in.

The final piece to the puzzle was ensuring all of Pure Electric's training requirements were met, encompassing the company’s large team and multiple combinations of training courses needed.

THE RESULTS

Pure Electric now have one centralised location for all their health and safety documentation, making management of health and safety regulations accessible to all staff at any time. This goes hand-in-hand with the digitisation of the company's forms for their monthly manager checklists, HR onboarding forms, accident reporting forms, and more.

Reactive maintenance is now managed through the Crysp Portal.  Any issues are reported directly through our bespoke digitised forms, resulting in real-time updates to the property maintenance team. This also creates a digital log, which gives Pure Electric teams the ability to accurately report the up-to-date status of health and safety events throughout the business.

OUR APPROACH

Crysp worked closely with Ian Pogue and the wider Pure Electric team to develop a plan for the use of our digital management system. This approach was divided into sections, to tackle the three main problems Pure Electric were facing. In many cases - particularly with reactive maintenance - clear communication and record-keeping were key to success.
